Mauritian Marvels
Mauritian Marvels Tour Overview
⦿ Date: Saturday, 3rd January 2026 | Location: Mauritius
⦿ Discover the authentic heart of Mauritius on a journey through its tea traditions, sacred sites, lush forests and natural wonders, ending with a taste of its world-famous rum.
⦿ Your day begins at the Bois Chéri Tea Factory and Plantation, the largest tea producer on the island. Here, you’ll enjoy a fascinating immersion into the history of Mauritian tea, learning about each stage of production, from the hand-picking of leaves to processing in the factory. A dedicated museum adds further insight, and of course, you’ll have the chance to sample a selection of teas while overlooking the rolling plantations.
⦿ Next, travel to the revered Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao), a sacred lake deeply rooted in Hindu tradition. Colourful temples and statues of gods encircle the tranquil waters, which symbolise the mighty River Ganges of India. In 1972, a priest brought holy water from the Ganges and poured it into the lake, forever connecting this serene pool to India’s holiest river for Mauritius’ large Hindu community, which makes up nearly half of the island’s population.
⦿ Continue into the Black River Gorges National Park, Mauritius’ largest protected forest, covering 17,000 acres of hills, valleys and cascading waterfalls. The thick forest is home to more than 300 species of flowering plants and nine bird species found nowhere else on Earth, including the rare pink pigeon, once near extinction, but now slowly recovering. This is a haven of natural beauty and biodiversity in the island’s southwest.
⦿ The adventure continues at the extraordinary Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark. This 8.5-hectare natural wonder features rippling sand dunes in seven striking hues – red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow – shaped over 600 million years. A geological marvel and a true spectacle of nature.
⦿ Pause for lunch at Le Chamarel Panoramic Restaurant. Set 260 metres above sea level, this Creole-style restaurant boasts sweeping views over the west coast and surrounding mountains – the perfect setting to savour authentic local flavours.
⦿ Finally, step into the refined world of the Rhumerie de Chamarel, a distillery designed by Mauritian architect Maurice Giraud to blend seamlessly into its spectacular surroundings. With the help of expert guides, you’ll explore the rum-making process from cane to cask, before sampling the award-winning rums that have made Chamarel famous.
⦿ This full-day tour brings together the island’s rich heritage, spiritual traditions, breathtaking landscapes and culinary pleasures – a true Mauritian marvel that delights all the senses.
