Island of Perfumes
Island of Perfumes Tour Overview
⦿ Date: Thursday, 8th January 2026 | Location: Mamoudzou, Mayotte
⦿ Begin your journey with a short introduction to Mayotte’s history, culture and traditions, a rich tapestry shaped by African, Arab and French influences that gives the island its unique character.
⦿ Your first stop is the picturesque coastal village of Dzaoudzi, on Petite Terre. This charming town offers a glimpse into Mayotte’s past, with historic buildings, a scenic waterfront, and small local shops. Stroll through the village and capture memorable photographs of the area.
⦿ From here, the tour shifts to the island’s agricultural heartland, starting with the Guerlain Plantation near Combani. Just 800 metres from the village, the plantation is lined with rows of ylang-ylang trees and an elegant alley of coconut palms. Established between 1995 and 2002 by the famous French perfumer Jean-Paul Guerlain, the estate once produced hectares of ylang-ylang flowers whose heady fragrance remains central to some of the world’s most iconic perfumes. During your guided visit, you’ll learn how the delicate yellow blossoms are harvested and distilled into their precious essential oil. You’ll also see the remains of Guerlain’s own house, still nestled within a beautifully kept garden.
⦿ Next, continue to a working vanilla plantation to discover the intricate craft of cultivating one of the world’s most prized spices. Learn about the careful hand-pollination of vanilla orchids and the slow, precise curing process that gives Mayotte’s vanilla its exceptional quality and aroma.
⦿ The day concludes with a leisurely scenic drive across Mayotte’s lush landscapes, where volcanic hills, serene lagoons, and traditional villages create postcard-perfect views.
