Mombasa Heritage Trail
Mombasa Heritage Trail Tour Overview
⦿ Date: Tuesday, 13th January 2026 | Location: Mombasa, Kenya
⦿ Your day starts with a visit to Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant examples of 16th-century Portuguese military architecture. Built between 1593 and 1596 to safeguard the harbour of Mombasa, the fort has witnessed centuries of conflict, from Omani sieges in the late 17th century to its later use as barracks and, under British rule, a prison. Today, it stands as an enduring symbol of Mombasa’s layered history and a fascinating landmark in East Africa.
⦿ From here, step into the labyrinth of Old Town, where narrow cobbled streets, ornate balconies, ancient mosques and carved doorways echo the city’s medieval past. Along the way, you’ll pass bustling markets alive with the scents of spices, fresh fruits, and the vibrant colours of local textiles.
⦿ Your tour continues with a drive down Moi Avenue to see the iconic Mombasa Tusks. Erected in 1952 to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II, these giant aluminium structures — known locally as Pembe za Ndovu (elephant tusks) — have since become one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
⦿ Next, stop at the renowned Akamba Handicraft Cooperative, one of the largest woodcarving industries in Kenya. Established in 1963 by just 300 artisans, it has since grown to nearly 3,000 skilled members. Here, you can watch craftsmen at work and browse an extraordinary range of carvings ,from lifelike animals and intricate masks to functional pieces and personalised sculptures.
⦿ A break is included for lunch, with the option to dine at a local restaurant (own expense), before returning to the port.
