Stories of Stone Town

Stories of Stone Town Tour Overview

⦿ Date: Saturday, 10th January 2026 | Location: Zanzibar, Tanzania

⦿ Discover the soul of Zanzibar with a guided exploration of Stone Town, the oldest quarter of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This historic maze of narrow lanes and bustling squares is unlike anywhere else, covering 50 hectares and home to over 18,000 residents. With its unique fusion of African, Arab, Indian, Persian and European influences, it’s a living museum of cultures and traditions.

⦿ Stone Town is a place of striking contrasts, where towering minarets, coral-stone houses, and ornately carved wooden doors sit side by side with lively bazaars and coffee stalls. You will be guided through its labyrinthine streets, sharing stories – sometimes amusing, sometimes harrowing – that bring Zanzibar’s layered past to life.

⦿ Highlights Include:

⦿ The Anglican Cathedral, built on the site of the former slave market. Here, you’ll learn about Zanzibar’s central role in the East African slave trade, one of the largest in the region, and the sobering legacy that endured well into the 20th century.

⦿ The House of Wonders, Zanzibar’s national museum, and the Palace Museum, once the royal residence.

⦿ The Old Fort, the Catholic Cathedral, and the Hamamni Persian Baths, each showcasing the town’s diverse heritage.

⦿ The vibrant Darajani Bazaar and textile street, alive with colour, spices and daily life.

⦿ A visit to the birthplace of Freddie Mercury, one of Stone Town’s most famous sons.

⦿ Along the way, you’ll see why Stone Town is not only a city of history, but also one of artistic importance, with architecture mostly dating back to the 19th century, and a food scene that reflects its cosmopolitan soul.

⦿ Your adventure ends with a relaxed lunch (own expense), where you can savour Tanzanian flavours accompanied by local music, the perfect finale to this introduction to Zanzibar’s cultural capital.
